Where your requirement lands
Finishing changes
The tooling stays the same, so the lead time and cost stay close to a standard build.
- Housing colour and texture
- Silk-screen printing and your logo
- Device model name and rating-label marking
- Packaging, manual and accessory set
Structural changes
Parts change, so there is some tooling work and some verification work after it.
- Relocated or added buttons and ports
- A different front bezel or connector cover
- Mounting features for a dock, kiosk or console
- Internal headers brought out to a base interface
New enclosure
A full ODM enclosure: more engineering, new tooling, and a longer route to the first sample.
- A different screen size or overall form factor
- Housing shaped around a specific installation
- New thermal and sealing design
- Tooling built for your product alone
What changes when the housing changes
| Area | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Ingress protection | The rating that applies to a platform was verified against that housing, seals and port covers. Change any of them and the rating has to be re-verified rather than carried across |
| Drop and vibration | A new enclosure redistributes mass and changes how impacts travel through the case, so mechanical testing belongs to the verification stage of the new part |
| Thermal behaviour | Sealed enclosures move heat differently; a change can affect sustained performance under load |
| Clearances | Modules such as scan engines, antennas and fingerprint windows need defined windows and clearances, which have to be respected in the new geometry |
| Packing and shipping | A different footprint changes the retail box, the carton quantity and palletisation, all of which are agreed before the first batch ships |
None of this makes structural work unattractive — it means the verification cost belongs in the plan instead of arriving as a surprise at acceptance.
Designed around the installation
Counters and service halls
Fixed installations where the applicant or customer sits opposite the operator, often with a second display.
Vehicles and mobile deployments
Docking, external power and strain relief matter more than colour, and the internal headers can be brought out to a base interface where needed.
Self-service and kiosk
Unattended use pushes requirement towards lock-down behaviour, mounting and cable management — settled together with software customization.
From sketch to tooled enclosure
| Stage | What you get |
|---|---|
| Requirement and concept | The intended shape, interface positions and environment, reviewed to see whether an existing tool set can be reused |
| Design review | A practical check on what is manufacturable, and what the change will do to sealing, drop performance and tooling cost |
| Tooling | Tools built for the agreed design, with the cost and the schedule stated in the proposal |
| Tooling sample | Parts off the new tool, reviewed and measured — usually the point where small adjustments are still affordable |
| Verification | Ingress, drop and any other tests the application requires, then mass production |
Industrial design questions
Can the housing colour and logo be changed without new tooling?
When does a housing change mean new tooling?
Does changing the enclosure affect the IP rating?
Can the device be designed to mount in a kiosk or vehicle dock?
Describe the mechanical requirement
- Whether the change is cosmetic, structural or a new enclosure
- Mounting and installation — counter, vehicle, kiosk, handheld
- Buttons, ports and where they need to sit
- Environmental target and cleaning agents used
- Drawings or references, if you have them
- Quantity, destination market and target date
